The candidate will be formally invited to the exam after payment of the
registration fee to the exam, being :
For the theoretical exam :
Student of the Sail Away Sailing School : euros 30
Any other participant : euros 50
Pour the practical exam:
Student of the Sail Away Sailing School : euros 100
Any other participant : euros 150
FUNCTIONNING OF THE EXAM AND GRADING
The exams are organised in the following order:
Before starting the second, practical part of the exam, the participant
will have succeeded the first, theoretical part of the exam. However,
the particpant can indefinitely try again.
The minimum score to be obtained for the licence is 60% per chapter and
50% per §.
MATERIAL TO FORESEE
Sail Away provides all necessary material (almanacs, charts, compass,
plotter, sailing gear). The candidate should bring a recent identity photograph.

Sail
Away delivers an ISL to every participant having succesfully completed
the practical and theoretical exam.
VALIDITY
The ISL certifies that its holder has satisfactory knowledge regarding
the handling of a sailing boat, whatever its length.
Showing the licence enables its holder to justify his competence when
dealing with boat rental organizatons in countries where a certificate
is demanded (e.g. Greece, Turkey, Croatia, ...).
This licence however, is not for professional use and does not cover
charter activities or transport of goods.
This licence has no limit in time.

REGISTRATION
Registration is open to all from 18 years old onwards and enjoying
satisfactory health condition.
The sailing course given by Sail Away or any other organization is
no condition for registration.

SUBJECT
MATTER FOR THE EXAM
Part 1 - Theoretical exam
§1. Funcioning of a sailing vessel, its components and vocabulary
(10%)
Oral examination- 15 minutes
§2. Regulations, rules of the road, signalisation at sea, buoyage
(15%)
Multiple choice questions - 45 minutes
§3. Navigation study of navigational charts, tides, tidal currents,
point fixing, dead reckoning, shaping a course. (40%)
Exercises on navigational chart - 1 H and 30 minutes
§4. Security, responsability, checking of components of the sailing
vessel, emergency procedures, communication with VHF. (15%)
Oral examination - 15 minutes
§5. Weather, general principles of meteorology, analysis of weatherforecasts.
(20%)
Oral examination and exercices on a map - 20 minutes
Part
2 - Practical exam
§1. Taking in charge a sailing vessel, checking its components
20%
Practical exercise on board - 20 minutes
§2. Harbour manÒuvres with engine, berthing, using warps,
anchoring, principal knots 30%
Practical exercise on board - 30 minutes
§3. ManÒuvres at sea under sail : tacking, gybing, reefing,
heaving to , man over board 50%
Practical exercise on board - 3 hours
Note : the candidate will only be allowed to start the practical
exam after succesful completion of the theoretical part.
